Glenshea Farm

Glenshea is a 100 acre working beef cattle and horse property near Hawkesdale in south-west Victoria, roughly half-way between Warrnambool and Hamilton.

Growing Red Angus cattle for beef sales, and breeding Australian stock horses, the farm is situated on the ancient volcanic plain that extends through the south west.

Well-watered by bore and dam, with plenty of natural shade and shelter from hardy native trees and several rows of pine, its pastures are soft and lush in winter and spring, perfect for horse grazing.

Even dry summers provide plenty of feed.

Shared agistment paddocks are five hectares in size, with individual paddocks being divided as required.

The relatively low-maintenance needs of beef cattle mean we can devote considerable time to our horses, and all animals on agistment receive daily supervision.

Owner Erica has many years farming experience, and prefers to use an ‘organic’ approach to farming style where possible.

This is achieved by concentrating on minimal chemical inputs, and optimising soil and animal health through balancing mineral content and microbial activity. Most of our hay is produced on the property as part of our pasture management system.

Approximately four hours travel from Melbourne, Glenshea is close to the many famous tourism attractions of south west Victoria, including the Shipwreck Coast, Great Ocean Road, and Volcanic Trail.

Like many ‘horse people’ in southwest Victoria, we are involved with WestVic Stockhorse, the Western Victorian Branch of the Australian Stock Horse Society.

Competitions range from pure fun to serious tests of ability for ‘gun’ riders, and what horse owner doesn't like to display their favorite animal in fine condition at a show?

Family-oriented, the branch is a friendly meeting-place for anyone with an interest in horses, and, as the name suggests, for owners of the wonderful Australian Stock Horse.

Events are held regularly throughout the year - check the website for details.
